It is also worth asking for a map of the facilities which are in the building - listing unusual gems like a Persian carpet, or the list of art installations. The former Imperial Castle is the last and youngest monarchical residence in Europe, created at the beginning of the 20th century for German Emperor Wilhelm II.

During WW2 the castle was completelly remodelled and made into the official quarters of Adolf Hitler. It can be visited with a guide assembly in the Great Hall , which allows to see many interesting nooks and crannies of the castle, unavailable on any other occasion, such as the original 5-ton throne of Wilhelm II.

More information on tour dates available here: www. In the National Museum there is a collection of Roman imperial portraits, extraordinary and rare among Polish collections. On the ground floor museum presents a unique collection of coffin portraits. The sensational thread and the daring theft of the painting became the basis of the scrpt of a film about this event "Tarapaty2".

Next to the cathedral, a state-of-the-art interactive Heritage Center of Cathedral Island "Bram a Poznania" was built. With the cathedral overlooking the whole area, a small Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Summo , cobblestone streets leading up to former ramparts and historic garden homesteads of cathedral canons is an enclave of peace and quiet, and somehow time seems to slow down here.

The p layers download a start card from the Internet www. Although there is no actual entertainers organizing the game, it is designed in a way that the city itself, and its own urban space is the organizer of the fun. Inscriptions, hidden sculptures, architectural details together with the content of the card are hints for the players to follow, leading to an exciting finale.

Until the 19th century it was a hill with a picturesquely located village of Winiary the name referring to vine cultivation , and afterwards it had been transformed into a massive fort. After WW2 it became an urban park. Many alleys and charming nooks invite the stollers, and the lovers of rollerblading or biking find it a dream location for active leisure. A huge meadow in the middle of the park is a place of various events and music concerts.

I ended up spending two days in Poznan and think this is the perfect amount of time to spend exploring this undiscovered city. Spend your first day in Poznan, exploring the centre of town including the medieval Old Town.

The Old Town was predominately destroyed during WWII, however, it has been completely reconstructed since and the main square is home a number of interesting buildings.

The Town Hall is arguably the most important building in the square and whilst no longer used for government matters it does contain a museum about the history of Poznan. There are a number of churches in the Old Town Square that are worth exploring — my favourite being St Stanislaus Church which is built with spectacular baroque style architecture. Cathedral Island is located about a half hour walk from the Old Town and contains a number of interesting sites worth exploring. This area certainly sees less tourism than the Old Town and shows you a different side of the city.

One of the reasons I was drawn to travel to Poznan was the proximity of Wielkopolski National Park to the city centre. The national park is located only 15km from Poznan and the best way to get here is to hop on one of the regional trains that run approximately hourly. There are also bus routes and you can even potentially rent a bicycle.

Wielkopolsi National Park is massive!
