I am not fond of external candidates in general, but Disney has a very specific culture. Will Sandberg be able to maintain that? They are. But that does nothing to change my resolve in thinking that Katzenberg would be the perfect Disney CEO.
As mentioned above, a younger version of Katzenberg wanted to run Disney. If Disney looks for an external CEO candidate, at least they could find one who truly knows the company.
In addition, Katzenberg has experience starting his own company from the ground up. And just think if Disney actually owned the properties most people think they already produce! There are a couple of reasons this will never happen.
Both parties are probably too proud to get out of their own way. Comcast is indeed working to buy Dreamworks and they will never let that go without a fight. Katzenberg is 65, the same age as Bob Iger. As unprecedented as this may be, Disney has faced a similar turn of fates before. In , Disney was in a tailspin.
The company barely survived multiple takeover bids and it needed a change. Eisner had experience with the company and Wells did not. Together, they formed a one-two punch that helped lay the groundwork for Disney behemoth we know today. Without Eisner and Wells, there would be no Frozen , or Avengers, or California Adventure theme park, or any of the thousands of Disney things that have happened over the past 30 years.
Disney can recapture that magic by making a similar move. Together, Sherwood and Sandberg might just make the perfect CEO and with this, Disney would be able to solidify its future.
