Why explorers are important

Everything we know today has been the result of explorers who have gone before us. Exploring is to travel through the unknown to learn or discover new information. Discoveries in geography, medicine, space, flora and fauna, that have changed the world for the better, are but a few of the riches of exploration. Instead, explorers show us the huge importance of team-building, careful planning, faultless execution, and courage. Second, explorers expand our ambition. They inspire us to think beyond what is possible.

How many young girls have been emboldened by astronaut, Sally Ride , to study STEM subjects and become explorers themselves? The song, Northwest Passage , by Stan Rogers describes a modern-day traveler seeking to re-create the trip of Sir John Franklin , who sought unsuccessfully a northwest passage through the Arctic Ocean to Asia—what moves the traveler is. Finally, the experience of explorers matters because they show how to prevail in the face of great adversity.

Indeed, in the experience of explorers, the adversity seems to be the main point. History teaches us that we worship heroes at our own risk. Then they each research one early explorer of the Americas and present their findings. Students brainstorm what it means to be an explorer, watch a short video, and write or draw on a world map what they would like to explore in the ocean.

Massive collections of artifacts found on expeditions are a thing of the past. Today, explorers document rather than collect on their travels, sharing their adventures in a more sustainable and responsible fashion.

Brainstorm ideas about exploration. Give each group a marker and a sheet of butcher paper with one of these questions on each paper: Why do people explore? What places have you explored? What did you learn? What places would you like to explore in or near your city or town?

What places would you like to explore in your home country? What places would you like to explore outside of your country? Have students mark their favorite ideas. Analyze past vs. Discuss the difference between exploration and expeditions. Analyze the reasons behind present-day expeditions. Have students answer these three questions in a paragraph for each: What is the purpose of this blue holes expedition?

What do you think the scientists want to accomplish? What additional reasons do they have for why they explore? How is the Blue Hole Expedition different than historical explorations? Hint: think about available technology and scientific advancements as well as purpose. Informal Assessment Have students summarize in writing their ideas for the questions in Step 4.

Learning Objectives Students will: list and assess ideas for why people explore, historically and currently brainstorm ideas for their own explorations analyze the purpose behind a Bahamas expedition.
